SNOOKER lovers are hoping to get in the right frame of mind to secure glory when they head to Thailand to compete in the World Disability Snooker Championships next week.
Joel Mayberry and Ben Rodgers, from Carlton and Carlecotes respectively, play alongside Rotherham’s Lee Hague and they’re all set to shoot for glory from June 17.
This year’s tournament will see the three South Yorkshire players compete in a series of best-of-five-frame matches, using all 15 reds.
The players will first take part in a round-robin group stage, with the best performers securing a place in the knockout phase
Joel, who was able to secure a place in the competition after running a successful fundraising campaign said: “Two weeks ago it was a very much a pipe dream to play in the World Championships as I couldn’t afford to pay for the flights and accommodation to take part.
“However, after receiving a lot of encouragement I decided to set up a Crowdfunder page and thanks to the generosity and support I’ve received, I was able to raise the funds.
“I’ve followed snooker and been in love with the game since I was five years old, but I’ve always played just for fun.
“However, last year I decided to pluck up the courage to enter the tour and really enjoyed the experience.
“I’m going into the tournament with no expectations, just being a part of the World Championships is something beyond my wildest dreams.
“It’s going to be a ‘pinch me’ moment when I walk out for my first game - and I’m really looking forward to the whole experience.”
