THE former leader of Barnsley’s Liberal Democrats group has been re-elected as the Mayor of Penistone.

Hannah Kitching stepped down as a councillor before the May local elections but was re-elected onto Penistone Town Council and will continue her role as the Lib Dems’ Yorkshire chair.

She said: “It is an honour to have been re-elected as Mayor of Penistone for the 2026/27 municipal year by a unanimous vote of my town council colleagues.

“Thank you all for your support.

“I’m also delighted to be supported by Coun Jon Palmer as deputy.

“I am looking forward to continuing to chair Penistone Town Council as we hopefully move forwards with the long overdue regeneration of Penistone Town Hall and the second cinema screen for Penistone Paramount.

“My mayoral charities will continue to be BSARCS and White Ribbon, and this year I intend to hold fundraising events including music events and a sponsored walk, as well as a tombola stall at this Sunday’s Penistone Gala.”
