Barnsley's top-scorer from last season, David McGoldrick, has turned down the offer of a new deal at Oakwell and joined their fellow League One club Mansfield Town.
The 38-year-old netted 18 goals in all competitions last season having signed a one-year deal.
The Reds wanted to keep him but he has instead moved to the Stags.
That leaves Barnsley with just 20-year-old Leo Farrell as striker options going into pre-season, as they will look to strengthen in that area.
