RESIDENTS who are living in fear of being involved in another accident on a fatal T-junction have urged road safety bosses to finally listen - after a home’s boundary wall was damaged for the fourth time in two years by a collision.

In the early hours of June 8 a vehicle crashed into the wall, on Paddock Road.

It was just hours after the wall had been rebuilt following the last accident in February.

The area around Paddock Road, Staincross Common and Shaw Lane is an accident blackspot, according to fed-up locals, with a separate incident last year resulting in a fatality.

Darton East councillors have been campaigning for several years to persuade the council to put measures in place to prevent further accidents.

Coun Dickie Denton told the Chronicle: “It’s totally unacceptable that residents have to live with a constant fear for their safety and their property.

“The council keep asking for evidence and it is there for all to see with four major incidents in two years impacting one property as well as the tragic fatality.

“If this had happened during daytime then there is every possibility that pedestrians could also have been in grave danger.

“We will continue to push the council to take concrete action to address this issue and we await cabinet members’ responses to this latest occurrence.”

Coun David Goddard, cabinet support member for environment, transport and communities, added: “We take all road safety concerns seriously and use data to guide our decisions on where action is needed.

“Following the incident on June 8, we visited the area and met with residents to hear their concerns.

|We understand people are worried and we are thankful no one has been hurt in the recent incident.

“Paddock Road, Greenside, Shaw Lane and Staincross Common all have a 30mph speed limit and recent checks show that the majority of vehicles are travelling well below this, with an average speed of 20.6mph.

“Based on this information, vehicle speeds are not currently causing an increased safety risk, and the road is not a priority for further action at this time.

“We want to reassure the community that we will continue to keep the situation under review and monitor for any changes.”
