BARNSLEY man John Stones was dropped from the England team for their draw with Ghana on Tuesday in the World Cup.
The defender from Thurlstone made his 90th appearance for the Three Lions six days earlier in the 4-2 win over Croatia.
But he was replaced by Marc Guehi for the stalemate with the Black Stars in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The decision by Thomas Tuchel ended the former Reds defender’s record as the only outfield player to have started every England game in the last five major tournaments.
The German manager said before the game he had made changes to add speed to the back line and that Guehi is ‘a little more agile’ than Stones and more used to playing as a left-sided centre-back.
Stones has barely featured for Manchester City in the Premier League over the last season, having struggled with a series of injuries.
England complete their group stage against eliminated Panama in New Jersey on Saturday – with a win meaning they will top the group – while they are almost mathematically certain to reach the knock-out stages.
Former Reds loanee Ivan Toney is yet to appear for the Three Lions in the tournament in North America.
