Mido is in discussion with Barnsley directors over a possible early end to his one-year contract, says manager Keith Hill.
The 29-year-old former Ajax and Tottenham player has made just one substitute appearances for the Reds and is in the second of two long spells out with injury.
Mido had recently been fined by the club after posting an ant-Israel message on social networking site Twitter.
Barnsley manager Keith Hill said the potential split will be ‘amicable’ and that he has learned a lot from working with the Egyptian striker.
Hill said: “I feel educated. Mido is an exceptional person. “He is somebody who has played at the highest level in most leagues in Europe. He’s fallen partway down the footballing tree. I thought we could reinstate him and I put a lot of effort in to the deal.
“I ignored a lot of people because I thought we were both going to resurrect his career. But every player has got to be compatible with what we are trying to achieve. It just hasn’t happened.
“We’re going to pursue different directions.”
