BIRDWELL golfer Steve Carroll had to wait 25 years for the second hole-in-one of his life and then just five days for the third - but he’s hoping the fourth will take a little longer after paying for drinks for the whole clubhouse twice.
The 72-year-old is a member at Barnsley Golf Club and earlier this month he managed his first hole-in-one at The Limes in a quarter of a century.
Like the old adage of London buses, it took him just five days to pick up the next.
He told the Chronicle: “I’ve been playing for about 30 years.
“I got my first 25 years ago and then a week last Thursday I had a hole-in-one on a 150-yard hole.
“I didn’t see it go in because it was hidden behind bunkers.
“We were looking all over for the ball and we eventually looked in the hole and it was there.
“Then the following Tuesday, on a different hole, I got another one and I actually saw it go in which was a nice feeling.”
But despite the excitement, Steve’s hoping it’ll take a little longer for his next one.
“The tradition is if you get an hole-in-one, whoever’s in the clubhouse when you get back, you buy everybody a drink,” he said.
“So over the two days, it cost me about 120 quid.
“I’m skint now - I don’t want anymore for a while.”
