A BY-ELECTION will be held in Penistone East after Reform councillor Kay Hughes resigned from her role - two months after being elected.

The make-up of Penistone East was two Labour councillors - Alex Burnett and Frances Nixon - and Coun Hughes following May’s local elections.

However, it has now been confirmed that Coun Hughes has resigned due to ‘personal reasons’.

Leader of the council William Brown said: “We’re all very sorry to see Kay step down as a councillor.

“She has been a fantastic colleague and a real asset to our team, working hard for the people of Penistone East and approaching everything with dedication and compassion.

“We’d like to thank Kay for everything she has done during our election campaign, and her time as a councillor and wish her and her family all the very best for the future.”

A by-election will now take place in August, with the exact date yet to be confirmed.
