GEORGE Easton has been described as the backbone of the Dearne Valley Bulldogs.

Without George’s tireless efforts, the club would struggle to continue operating let alone to the standard that he maintains.

The clubhouse, car park and large playing field at THE Dearne Valley Bulldogs’ site are all looked after almost every day by George - as he carries out general maintenance, ensures the safety of facilities and welcomes guests.

When asked about his dedication to the club, George, 84, said: “Mainly it comes from the fact that I have always been interested in rugby league.

“Our president, Duncan Henderson, decided to open the club to children so we have young ones of four, five, six years old and so on.

“And really to watch them play and see their little faces light up, well it is just brilliant.”

George is responsible for organising and running the club’s weekly members’ draw.

The fundraiser has accumulated over £20,000 for the Dearne Valley Bulldogs over the years.

This has provided vital financial support for the club, helping it to continue offering opportunities for local people.

He has also taken part in a number of sponsored walks and other fundraising activities which have supported a range of local charities and community causes.

Community Development Officer for the Dearne Area Team, Darryl Hand, said: “George never seeks recognition for what he does.

“He volunteers simply because he cares deeply about the club and the people who use it.

“His selflessness, dedication and willingness to always go the extra mile embody everything that volunteering should be about.

“While George’s work can often go unseen he has proved to be invaluable to the club as the kind of volunteer every organisation dreams of.”
