GARAGES across Barnsley have been checked to see whether they are storing and disposing waste legally.

Officers from the police, council and Environment Agency worked together across Yorkshire.

They focussed on tyres because European legislation means they can no longer go to landfill sites. Instead they should be disposed of by a registered carrier but many are still fly-tipped.

Environment Agency officer Gerard Morris said: “This has been a fantastic result. More than 100 officers took part in the crackdown and they have sent out a very clear message that flytipping will not be tolerated."
