LOCKING up some of the town’s most prominent figures raised more than £25,000 for Barnsley hospice.

Council leader Steve Houghton, comedian Duncan Norvelle and MP Eric Illsley were among those to volunteer for a few hours behind bars at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court.

After being arrested during a meal on Saturday they were taken for a mock trial and thrown in the cells with orders to use their mobiles to raise a minimum of £1,000 to gain release.

However as they dialled, staff from the hospice made their own calls and offered to keep the captives for a bit longer in exchange for more sponsorship.
