THE Dearne might lose most of its post offices if sub-postmasters fail to persuade the Government to keep them open.

“The Post Office is a shambles at the moment and we want to know how many they are shutting,” said Paul Haines of Goldthorpe post office.

“If we don’t do it now we may not have anything to fight for at the end of the day. I’m not scaremongering but I expect them to announce the closure of 8,000 offices at the end of this year.”

About 5,000 people a week visit Goldthorpe post office, most of them to collect pensions, child allowance and income support. Others use it for mail, paying bills, such as telephone, gas and electricity, to renew motor vehicle tax and currency.

“We don’t know what will happen but it could be that they will put only so many in each area and the Dearne could end up with one. At the moment everyone is supposed to be within one mile of a post office, but it could change to five or more.”
