A pair of Hoyland music-lovers celebrated 50 years together in style with a 50s and 60s' party.

 

Janet and Ken Saxton, donned their dancing shoes and smartest rock and roll clobber for the event on Saturday.

 

Family and friends enjoyed music from the couple's grandchildren including talented singer Lauren Tate, 16.

 

The Kirk Balk pupil, wowed those at Rockingham Community Centre with her renditions of Elvis, Etta James and Little Richard to name a few.

The couple were also treated to a slideshow of wedding snaps and family pictures.

Janet, 68, said she and Ken, 70, met at High Green Feast and came dancing at the centre as teenagers.

"We had a lovely evening, I knew it was going to be good but it was far better than what I expected. It was so nice," she said.

 

"We used to go there when I was 16 and Ken was 18 and there was a dance on a Friday night. I used to go with my friends and Ken came later."

Putting on a ponytail to complete her outfit also turned back the clock, she added.

"I used to have one and I felt 16 again."

 

The pair married at Worsbrough Church before moving to Elsecar. In 1967 they moved to Field Head Road in Hoyland and they have been there ever since.

 

Janet said she has worked a number of jobs including helping out at in the kitchen at The Hare and Hounds in Hoyland Common.

 

Ken, a retired miner, worked at Elsecar and Barnburgh Main Collieries and Janet said it was love at first sight.

 

Janet says the key to a successful marriage is down to 'a bit of patience' and 'a bit of give and take'.

 

The couple have three children, Kevin, Jeanette and Helen as well as eight grandchildren.

In June they will be setting sail on a Mediterranean cruise to mark the milestone.
