Barnsley manager David Flitcroft is certain that the Reds will be neither relegated or safe before the final game of the season at local rivals Huddersfield Town on May 4.
Both sides are currently in the relegation zone and the match will have extra drama because the Terriers manager is former Barnsley boss Mark Robins. Flitcroft says that he does not think the Reds will be safe by the season finale.
"I just can't foresee that happening with the way the results have gone recently," Flitcroft told the Chronicle.
"In a normal year that could happen but this year teams are just digging out freak results. Usually three teams are probably down by now and other teams are safe so they have given up.
"But there's still something in every game this time. It's been the most competitive league in the world. The only thing we can probably guarantee is that other teams around us will win because they have been doing that for the last four or five weeks. Everybody had Hull to beat Wolves but they didn't."
Flitcroft said after the Derby match that he thought his side needed to win two of the remaining three games but yesterday he said he believes four points could keep them up.
He said: “It might be enough to win one and draw one. If we get out of the relegation zone at Forest then the job is not done. If we have got to beat Huddersfield then we’ll beat Huddersfield. By that time we’ll have top players coming back who will be ready and fresh.”
After the final home game of the season against Hull on April 27, the Reds will train all week on the first team Oakwell pitch before traveling to Huddersfield on May 4.
