Barnsley secured their Championship status on a dramatic final day of the season as they drew 2-2 at Huddersfield Town while Crystal Palace sent Peterborough down with two late goals.
Posh were leading 2-1 at Selhurst Park before Kevin Phillips and Mile Jedinak netted to secure a 3-2 win. When news of Jedinak's last-minute goal filtered through, the Reds coaching staff celebrated wildly before telling the players that they no longer needed to win the game.
Goalkeeper Luke Steele kept the ball at his feet for the last two minutes as the two teams settled for a draw which kept them both in the Championship. Both sets of fans then united in chants of 'Yorkshire!' and 'we are staying up.'
It completed a remarkable survival story for the Reds who were seven points adrift of safety in January after Flitcroft took over. They took the lead on 14 minutes at Huddersfield as Chris O'Grady took advantage of a slip by home captain Peter Clarke and finished well from the left side of the area.
Town were poor in the first half but improved after the break and levelled on 53 minutes when Jermaine Beckford chipped Steele.
Both teams had several chances at 1-1 before Jason Scotland headed the Reds in front from one yard out following superb work from David Perkins and O'Grady.
Seven minutes later it was 2-2 when James Vaughan scored with a deflected shot. But that scoreline proved to be enough to keep both sides up and spark extraordinary scenes at the end.
