A BIG chunk of town centre land is being sold off to a property developer and the 14 businesses on site have been given notice to quit.
Keith Lax owns the first block of buildings on old Doncaster Road from Metro Tiles to the Credit Union, the extensive yard at the back and a garage adjacent to it on Lambra Road.
Mr Lax has written to his tenants to tell them that he and his wife were selling up and asked them to vacate their premises by May next year.
The letter states: “We have recently had an approach by a property developer who wishes to purchase the whole of the site within the bounds of 8 to 24 Doncaster Road, Freeman's Yard and Market Garage in Lambra Road. We have agreed to the sale of the whole site.”
Many of the shops have been trading for years, such as Barnsley Pram World. Others say they have spent vast amounts of money on refurbishments.
Two of the units provide services to some of the most-needy people in the town.
