A SHAFTON family had a lucky escape when their two cars were petrol bombed yards from their shop and nearby houses.

Attackers threw a petrol bomb into the car and van of Svetlana (Lana) Safonkina and her partner Sergey Tikhonou in the early hours of last Friday.

Lana was woken at around 5am by an explosion and looked out of the window to find their cars and van ablaze yards from their High Street shop, Shafton Stores.

She woke her partner, his father who was visiting and the couple’s two children Elizabeth, four and Alex, one.

She dialled 999 and started screaming for her neighbours to wake up because their bungalow is close to the business.

Fire fighters were on the scene in minutes and able to put out the blaze before it spread.

The couple from the Samara region of Russia have owned the shop and lived in the village for two years.
