A YOUNG Barnsley punk rock band are looking forward to a television appearance and a national tour after winning a competition.

Midair 91 proved they have more fans than any of the other new bands in the Popworld Promotes contest for October, a monthly event for unsigned acts.

The three teenage band members, who all hail from Brierley, are to perform on Channel 4 programme Popworld.

Their victory came after more than 1,000 fans texted in to support them, 700 more than their nearest rivals.

Drummer Ben Hinchliffe, from Church Street, said the band was looking forward to making the most of their big break.

The 16-year-old said: “It was a real surprise to us when we won. It is fantastic to know that a few people out there like our music.

“We’re really looking forward to going on Popworld, although we’re nervous because we’ve never done been on television before.”

The band are already flushed with success, having reached the final of the Battle of the Bands competition at the Birdwell Club in September.
