Barnsley crashed out of the Capital One Cup with a 5-1 loss at home to Premier League Southampton on Tuesday night.

Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, 41, became the oldest ever Reds player but was not majorly at fault for any of the goals as the Saints showed their Premier League class while Barnsley had their moments but made too many errors.

Steven Davis put the visitors ahead after a lucky deflection in the box. Former Reds striker Jay Rodriguez curled a shot from the edge of the box into the top corner. Stephen Dawson, who captained Barnsley, fired in four minutes later from 25 yards with a fine effort.

The Reds were searching for an equaliser but Saints striker Emmanuel Mayuka made it 3-1 on 66 minutes.

Mayuka then was brought down by McNulty and Davis tucked away the penalty before threading through Ramirez who made it 5-1 with the goal of the game.

The Reds' only win of the season came in the previous round of the Leauge Cup against Scunthorpe on penalties. They have conceded 17 goals in their first six matches of the campaign.
