Keep fit addict Paul Nugent is fighting back against an almost incurable form of cancer by doing what he enjoys most - running, cycling and swimming.

The 53-year-old former Wombwell newsagent believes by keeping physically and mentally fit and by changing his diet and lifestyle he will be able to tackle prostate cancer.

He was preparing for his first triathlon a year ago when he was given the diagnosis. At first he thought doctors had made a mistake because there were no symptoms other than a slight discomfort which his GP had put down to saddle-soreness due to his cycling.

But blood tests had unexpectedly revealed an aggressive form of the disease, so he opted for the immediate removal of the prostate gland and a sizeable tumour.

A year after his diagnosis  he is said to have less than a five per cent chance of survival.

Determined to return his body to a near normal state, he is running, swimming and cycling regularly.

He's also juicing most of his food, plans to set up a blog and website to share his story and journey so far and has been accepted to run in the London marathon in April, 2014.
