Scott Wiseman admits he will never win the support of every Barnsley fan but is happy with the way his career is going after making his 100th Reds appearance and securing an international future.
The defender, who turned 28 this month, reached triple figures in Saturday's win over Middlesbrough and could make his first international appearance for Gibraltar as early as next month.
He told the Chronicle: "My grandparents moved out there through work in the 1950s and my mum and uncles were born out there. They moved back when my mum was very young but I have been there twice. There's not a lot of history but there is a little bit.
"Now they have got the UEFA standing it's a good opportunity for me to test myself at another level. Everything has been sent off and the paperwork's there. They might have a friendly in the next international break (November 10-22) but if not it will be in the New Year.
"Then we will be in the draw for Euro 2016 qualifying and it will interesting to see who we play. They are building a stadium in Gibraltar but they will play in Portugal for now. I played for England under 20s and I thought that was it for me then I saw the opportunity with Gibraltar and thought 'why not?'
"The lads at Barnsley have given me a bit of stick for it but I knew that was what I was going to have to take when I made the decision."
Wiseman is no stranger to receiving stick at Oakwell. He had a difficult start to last season and was targeted by Reds fans with boos and abuse on Twitter then almost left to join Blackpool in January. But he got back into the side and has been a consistent performer ever since.
He said: "I don't think I'll ever win everybody round but I think I've turned the corner. It was a difficult time last Christmas. My grandma had just died so I was in a low place anyway and then what happened with the fans just compounded it. But that's when you have got to show strength of character and come out fighting and I like to think I did that. It's brilliant to have played 100 games and to know how I've got there as well because I have gone through quite a lot since I have been at Barnsley."
