An HGV driver by day, but Army reservist by night, is appealing for people to join 150 transport regiment to help prevent a shortage of recruits.
Lance Corporal Sam Wood, as he is known one evening a week and every other weekend, has been a volunteer in the Army reserves for more than seven years and has just returned from the unit’s two-week annual training camp.
The camp is designed to train reservists in new skills as well as maintain their current skills to a level where they can be deployed at any point in time to support the regular army in places such as Afghanistan.
On his return Sam, from Royston and who works for SW Group Logistics, said: “The annual camp is certainly a highlight when you join the reserves.
"Tiring, that’s for sure, but also a great a challenge and enormously enjoyable.”
Sam added: “I'm looking forward to deploying soon. I was due to go to Afghanistan but due to my work commitments and the birth of our baby I was able to defer my deployment.
"I would recommend anyone thinking about joining the Army reserve to go for it. You are paid to learn new skills and get to fill your spare time with a great job.”
