A FESTIVE forest of 17 Christmas trees will illuminate the countdown to Christmas at one local church.

The trees, fully decorated with lights, will be on display at Staincross Methodist Church from this weekend to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the opening of the building. Groups who use the building and church members’ families have been invited to ‘sponsor’ and decorate a tree depicting themed topics.

Church minister, Rev John Morton said: “The events committee has put a lot of work into the weekend’s planning and organisation. It is a chance to show how the church has progressed since its opening and also to look to the future while remembering the importance of Christmas.”

The launch of the ‘Christmas Tree Festival’ will be at an opening service at 7pm today. An open day will take place tomorrow starting at 10am and a welcome is extended to all members of the community to visit the church and join in the celebrations.

The day ends with a buffet and celebration concert at 5.30pm and 7.30pm respectively. Entertainment for the concert will be provided by Judith Hibbert, the Woodsome Beck Ensemble, David Dand on guitar and Staincross Ladies’ choir. Tickets are £8 for the buffet and concert, and £4 for the concert only.

The weekend will conclude with celebration services on Sunday at 10.30am and 6pm and the church will be open for viewing throughout the day. Both services will be led by the by the Mr Morton, and churches throughout the area will be attending the evening service. Refreshments will be available all weekend.
