A PLAY area on a rundown piece of land is being officially opened on Monday.

Sugden's recreation ground has undergone a six-month facelift which has seen play equipment put in, footpath lighting installed and a games area developed.

More than £100,000 has been spent on transforming the grassed field, off Stocks Lane, Barnsley into a park and more work is planned on the car park and on more tree planting.

The opening will be attended by children from Summer Lane Primary who have designed posters urging people to keep the area clean, and local councillors.

Coun Sandra Birkinshaw said: "We have worked hard to get this investment. I have already had favourable comment from people about the changes, include youngsters who now have facilities instead of a muddy patch of grass."
