A HIGHAM couple who met at a dance in Barnsley have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Tommy and Mary Howarth of Stevenson Drive were married at Higham Methodist Church on January 3, 1942.
Tommy, 89, was born at Worsbrough Bridge and Mary, 85, (nee Hemingway), hails from Barugh Green where the couple lived until they moved to Higham 39 years ago.
Tommy started work at Barrow Colliery in 1932 and spent the whole of his working life in local pits, including a number of years as a deputy, until he retired in 1978. Before her marriage Mary worked at Hinchliffe’s Mill, Denby Dale, and later spent many years working as a school meals’ supervisor at Barugh Green Primary School.
