THE planning application to build a super school on the Wombwell and Darfield boundary may not be considered by the government.

Councillors expected the application would have to be dealt with by Whitehall because the site is in the green belt.

But it has emerged this week the government may not "call in" the application for detailed examination after all. This would, in effect, rubber stamp any council decision.

The application has still to be approved by the council but the education department is pressing for the Darfield Main pit site.

John King, planning officer for the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, said his organisation was opposed to the location of the 1,800-pupil school and would not accept defeat despite the latest disclosure the government may not get involved.
