MORE than 1,000 people received support from a sexual abuse and rape crisis service in Barnsley last year as high profile abuse cases like Rolf Harris encourage more victims to come forward.
Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services (BSARCS) revealed in a report to councillors that it supported more than 1,000 people in the last financial year - 90 per cent of them female.
Of the 1,000, 76 per cent were reporting historical sexual abuse. About 60 per cent relates to historical child sexual abuse. The report also reveals that since January this year BSARCS has received 125 referrals for children and young people.
