BARNSLEY Council is to take over the running of the £10.5m Digital Media Centre.

The building on County Way, Barnsley, opened in 2007 - providing office space and support to digital and media companies and houses about 40 firms.

The building was funded by Barnsley Council, regional development and European money and is managed by Oxford Innovation, a company that manages a UK network of business and innovation centres.

But the Chronicle has learned the contract between the council and Oxford Innovation will not be renewed when it ends in March.Instead the council intends to manage the centre itself.

Council leader, Sir Steve Houghton says the DMC, which he describes as a "fabulous facility".

He said the DMC could even generate income for the cash-strapped council.

"We need more jobs, we need more businesses in Barnsley and part of our strategy is to help create those jobs and businesses," he said.
