ATHERSLEY Recreation Football Club has been given a donation of £500 towards much needed improvements to the junior function room at the club.

The money was given by Leeds and Yorkshire Housing Association (LYHA) and Southdale Ltd.

LYHA and Southdale Ltd is building 27 properties on the site of the former leisure centre on Newstead Road with which the club was associated.

Athersley Recreation FC is based at Sheerien Park, on Ollerton Road, which is just around the corner from the development.

It houses two full-size football pitches, five junior football pitches, changing facilities, a snack bar and a licensed bar in addition to a medical and physiotherapy room.

The club has since gone from strength to strength and the senior team now plays in the Northern Counties East Premier Division attracting an average of 150 supporters to home matches.

Andrew Shone from Athersley Recreation FC said: "We are very grateful to LYHA and Southdale Ltd for their donation which will enable us to make our junior cabin fit-for-purpose ready for the winter months.

"Donations like this are vital in helping us to fund the club, which is run solely by volunteers, and in making this wonderful facility available to the local and wider community."
