THE Walker children marvelled at all the ancient sites, saw the Valley of the Kings and sailed down the Nile.
As soon as they arrived back at Darfield Foulstone School, Connor, 15, and Nicole, 12, found their dream holiday in Egypt had inspired them to improve their work.
Their mum, Christine, a duty manager, said: “It was a big culture shock. In Egypt, if you are not well off, you do not get an education.”
But within a few weeks she and their father, David, were fined £50 per child for taking them on holiday during school term. Christine, of Norfolk Road, Great Houghton, said: “In a way the education authority should have paid us to take them, it was educational. They have not been the same since they got back and are taking education more seriously.”
The couple, who have been together for 18 years, said it was only the second time they had not been away in school holidays.
