HOYLAND war memorial has been through the wars but is now getting a facelift in time for Armistice Day on November 11.

South Area Council is using some of its budget to have the memorial on West Street cleaned. New names are being engraved on the memorial and a new surface installed for people to stand on during remembrance ceremonies.

Hoyland Milton councillor Mick Stowe said: "Historically, an ice cream van had parked on the tarmac at the side of the memorial leaving it all oil stained."

South Area Council has also used its budget for other works such as a new bench in Jump cemetery and regular maintenance work at the Blacker Hill war memorial.
