THE original market bell will be rung for the first time in decades on Wednesday to mark the start of trading on the new open market.

There will be 40 stalls on Cheapside, May Day Green, Queen Street and Peel Square.

Council leader Sir Steve Houghton will ring the bell at 2pm and it will be used to mark the completion of each phase before it is hung in the redeveloped market halls.

Market days remain the same - Tuesday, second hand and collectables, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, general market and Sunday, car boot.The inside market hall and meat and fish market will continue to trade through the redevelopment.
