HEALTH minister Rosie Winterton cut the first piece of turf at the start of works to build an £8m mental health unit at Kendray Hospital.

The unit, which is expected to be completed by next spring, will take up to 30 patients and replace the wards currently used at Barnsley hospital.

Improved facilities include an intensive care unit, therapy suites and activity rooms. Ms Winterton said: “It is a real example of how the significant funding in mental health is delivering modern services that are better geared to meet people's needs.

“I am delighted to have met both the staff and service users that have been involved in the development of this exciting project.”
