DARTON is the first village in the borough to get a road sign which records the speeds at which vehicles are travelling.

It is in operation on Huddersfield Road, near the Premdor factory. It flashes green when a car is travelling under the 30mph limit and red if a vehicle is speeding.

Following a near miss at the pedestrian crossing last May Darton woman Valerie Bott began campaigning for traffic-calming measures in the village.

She told the Chronicle she is elated although the sign should be further towards the brow of the hill just before the motorway bridge. She added that more signs are needed especially at the crossroads near the Rose and Crown and in the centre of the village because of the dangerous speeds of some motorists.
