THE heat from a hugh blaze at a pallet yard in Royston started to melt fire-fighters' jackets.
Eye witnesses say flames shot more than 50 feet into the air and could be seen as far away as Carlton and Shafton as flames from hundreds of pallets lit up the night sky on Saturday.
It started at about 5.30pm and took nine pumps including the aerial ladder from Aston five hours to bring the blaze under control and officers then spent until tea time the following day damping down at Naylors Yard on Lund Hill Lane.
At the height of the blaze fire fighters were limited by poor water supply and had to get water from Monckton Coking Plant opposite.
