Assistant referee Darren England said he had to be on his toes as he officiated the tussle between arguably the best two players in the world.

The Premier League official, from Little Houghton, was running the line at Old Trafford on Tuesday night as Argentina's Lionel Messi lined up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

Darren, 28, who now lives in Broomhill, said: "It was a fantastic appointment to get, even if it was a friendly. I was over the moon.  Messi and Ronaldo were on for a half each and I had to be on my toes, not just with them, but with all the players.

"I gave Higuain (Napoli striker Gonzalo) offside but Messi and Ronaldo behaved themselves."

Darren will have to be quick off the mark again tomorrow. He is set to officiate at Arsenal against Manchester United. Portugal won the game 1-0 thanks to a 90th-minute Raphael Guerreiro goal.
