RADICAL proposals to create one town centre 'super-school' on two sites have been dropped. Under Barnsley Council's plans to 'remake learning' Holgate and Kingstone schools are to be replaced by a single advanced learning centre. The flagship school - dubbed a 'skills centre of excellence' by borough bosses was planned to be split on both the Holgate and Kingstone sites. But confidential cabinet papers obtained by the Chronicle last week show the proposal has been snubbed in favour of building a single site super-school. The leaked cabinet report reveals that "reorganisation schools should not be developed on split sites." It confirms a number of options are available for the devlopment on one site and negotiations are underway with landowners. It is not known where the new school will be built but work on it is not expected to start until March 2010 with the school opening in Autumn 2011. Council education spokeswoman Linda Burgess said the council had been told all schools should be on a single site because it is more efficient. "Generally everybody would prefer schools on a single site. It makes it much easier for administration and to get a sense of a whole school community. That is important for the development of the town centre advanced learning centre."
