THE council has approved the first phase of multi-million pound plans to revitalise Athersley and New Lodge.
Almost £1.6m from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund will be invested in the two estates over four years.
It will be spent on measures to reduce crime, improve green spaces and give residents a greater say in the future.
The funding is part of a wider long-term project which could have up to £10m ploughed into the area.
Coun David Bostwick said priority would be given to New Lodge and parts of Athersley North.
“Athersley and New Lodge are two of the most deprived places in the borough,” added Coun Bostwick. This project will mean local people will be involved in improving their estates. We will look at what residents want and what their priorities are and act upon them.”
A neighbourhood management team will now be appointed to oversee the project and further public consultation will be undertaken.
