A MOTORIST was set on fire when he pulled up to take a phone call in Kendray.

The man, who lives on the estate, stopped on Gerald Road just before 8.30pm on Thursday.

He was approached by another man, also thought to live in Kendray, and wound down the window to speak to him. After a short conversation the pedestrian doused the driver in petrol and also poured fuel over the car's roof and door before setting it alight.

DI Nigel Donohue is investigating the incident. He said the injured man managed to free himself from the car and pull off his jacket which was on fire. He then rolled himself on a grass verge to put out the flames.

He was taken to Barnsley hospital but referred to a specialist burns unit in Liverpool where he will have surgery.

A man has been arrested.
