Peter Ramage says he would like to sign permanently with Barnsley at the end of the season because he believes in Danny Wilson's long-term vision.

The 31-year-old agreed a third loan spell from Premier League Crystal Palace to the Reds on Saturday which will keep him at Oakwell until the summer when he will be a free agent.

"I'm delighted to stay and hopefully there might be something long-term for me here," Ramage told the Chronicle.

"The club are trying to build something that will take time and I want to be a part of that."

Ramage says he always wanted to stay but that there was interest from other clubs. The former Newcastle United defender said: "There was a bit of upheaval last week with what was going on at Palace (the arrival of new manager Alan Pardew).

"One day I was going back down there, one day I was going to Barnsley and one day I was going somewhere else.  I always knew I had probably kicked my last ball in a Palace shirt.  But I am coming to the end of my contract there this summer and maybe they were looking for a club that was going to pay a few quid for me.

"That was the only issue but I stressed I wanted to stay at Barnsley."

Ramage – who has played 41 games for Barnsley and scored twice – is one of the more experienced players Reds manager Danny Wilson is hoping will provide leadership for his young squad. He played alongside teenage academy graduates Paul Digby, Mason Holgate and George Smith on Saturday and was impressed with their performances against Championship opposition in Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.

He believes those young Reds can reach the second tier or even the Premier League but also says the side's lack of experience could hinder their chances of a top six finish.

"We have got to try and get there but it's going to be tough.  There are a lot of good teams and a lot of teams with more experience than what we've got in our squad.  Hopefully that raw talent and ability that we have will help us. We just want to finish as high as possible. It would be great if we could make the play-offs but this season was always about consolidating."
