A LOCAL entrepreneur has been nominated for a business award for his efforts in setting up a not-for-profit enterprise that helps school children be more active.

Former PE teacher Darren Padgett started Team Activ in 2011.

The idea came after funding for the School Sport Partnership, which he had managed for ten years, was scrapped.

Darren wanted to continue improving the sport scene in Barnsley, so he created a programme to help communities improve their self confidence and self belief through sport.

The revenue from Darren's business is used to support his work with children. Team Activ is now involved with every secondary school in Barnsley and more than half of the primary schools in the borough, offering extracurricular sport.

It's this achievement which has helped him make the list of 11 entrants who could win a Yorkshire Emerging Entrepreneur Award.
