A SHOPKEEPER has criticised a supermarket's decision to give away hundreds of loaves of bread to neighbouring householders.
Tesco vans were driving around Platts Common and Hoyland on Monday, doling out Hovis bread – a stunt which left shopkeeper Craig Wolstenholme fuming.
He said: "Local businesses have been affected by the arrival of the store. To combat this, businesses like mine have had to change suppliers and cut margins drastically which has left us struggling."
Tesco spokesman Mark Thomas said: "We're really keen to offer a little something extra for customers in the Hoyland community and thought that providing one of people's everyday essentials, like a loaf of bread, would be a positive gesture."
