WOMBWELL’S park and ride spaces will soon triple providing an alternative to driving into Barnsley or Sheffield. South Yorkshire Transport Executive, the council and Ben Bailey Homes are working on a project to increase parking at Wombwell train station. The new car park will be on the site of the old Wombwell Foundry and will have 50 to 60 spaces in addition to the 29 marked bays by the station already. The Transport Executive say the site will have CCTV cameras and good lighting offering a safe environment for passengers to leave their cars. Parking in Barnsley for the day can cost £4, but parking at Wombwell station is free. A standard return to Barnsley is cheaper at £3.10 and a cheap return is £2.20. It only takes five minutes. Sheffield can be reached in 23 minutes and London in 2 hours 34 minutes. A Transport Executive spokesman said: “Park and ride sites are a great way to encourage people to leave their car on the outskirts of the town centre rather than driving into work every day and are environmentally friendly. “They provide a convenient, good value and easy way to travel to work and mean passengers don't have to worry about congestion.” Coun Dick Wraith has been pushing this scheme forward. “When all those houses go up a lot of people will be commuting and the car park is already very full. We need this extra car park.”
