Former Red John Stones and 30-goal striker Harry Kane are expected to play at Oakwell for England under 21s next month in a game Barnsley hope will be a lucrative sell-out.

The young Lions will host Belarus from 7.45pm on Thursday, June 11 in a warm-up for the European Under 21 Championships which start a week later in the Czech Republic.

The deal was completed on Wednesday and the match will provide an unexpected cash boost for the Reds as they begin their recruitment drive and promotion push in League One.

"To have been chosen for such a prestigious fixture before an important championship is testament to the quality of the infrastructure and facilities at Oakwell," said Reds chief executive Ben Mansford.

"The deal was agreed this week so we have had a much shorter amount of time than normal to turn things around for such a big game.

"But I know the staff at the club will work very hard to ensure the game is a resounding success.

"I would ask all of our supporters to come and enjoy the game and to hopefully see one of their own John Stones back on the Oakwell pitch."

Both Kane, who has 20 Premier League goals for Tottenham Hotspur this season, and Everton defender Stones are expected to be named in the squad for the championships and are likely to play in the friendly at Oakwell.

It will be a first competitive return to his hometown club for Stones, from Thurlstone, who came through the Reds' academy and made 28 appearances for the first team before joining Everton in January 2013 and collecting four senior England caps. The former Penistone Grammar pupil, who will turn 21 later this month, was back at Barnsley to watch their 5-0 win over former manager Keith Hill's Rochdale two weeks ago.

Stones played against Kane at Oakwell in a 3-1 FA Youth Cup win for Barnsley in 2010 which is remembered for a spectacular 20-yard overhead kick by Danny Rose. Another former Red who may feature for the under 21s is Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland who played 13 matches for Barnsley on loan last season.

England under 21s last came to Oakwell in September 2011 when they beat Israel 4-1 with a side featuring future senior England stars Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ross Barkley.

Under 21s manager Gareth Southgate said: "Hopefully we'll be able to generate some strong support at Oakwell to give us a good send off for the Euros."

Tickets for the game – which will be broadcast live on BT Sport - will be available to pre-order on Monday from the Oakwell box office and online. They are £10 for adults and £5 for concessions with a half price deal for Reds season ticket holders.
