PLANNERS have given the go-ahead for controversial plans which will shape the future of Wortley - but the community have been assured the work will 'keep the heart of the village'.

Wharncliffe Estates has spent years working to get a raft of plans, known as the Wortley Masterplan, accepted by Barnsley Council.

Overall they represent a widespread package of developments which will include building new homes for sale, alongside other changes to improve the village including the creation of new rented housing, more commercial sites, improved car parking and highways changes.

Wharncliffe Estates spokesman Christopher Orme told the Chronicle: "We wanted an overall plan for the village which was acceptable. We will do it in gentle stages.

"It is very much in its early stages, there will not be big 'for sale' signs going up. It will be done in a methodical, sensible, way.".

Other changes include the construction of new car parking, a holiday cottage and improvements to the infrastructure of the village.
