THOUSANDS of people are demanding a Barnsley town centre underpass be closed following the serious sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.
An online petition to close the Alhambra underpass included 2,300 names within hours of it being posted on Facebook. It was posted following the serious sexual assault which occurred at 8.30pm on Sunday.
Detectives are reviewing CCTV and increased patrols are being carried out in the area to provide reassurance to the community.
Investigating officer, Det Ch Insp Chris Singleton said: "We are doing everything we can to catch the offender and the victim has been supported by specially-trained officers following her ordeal."
Police are also monitoring social media platforms after the girl's identity, which is protected by law, was revealed online. Officers said they may pursue anyone who names her.
