CAMPAIGNERS against ‘the biggest eyesore in Barnsley’ are taking their fight to the local government ombudsman.

The disgruntled residents have formed the Hoyland Ashroyd Action Group to seek answers on how Barnsley Council came to approve the planning application for the giant warehouse.

The protesters, led by local residents Steven Sylvester, Ken Smith and Christine Price, hope to send over 40 complaint letters to the ombudsman from residents . Mr Sylvester of Stonehill Close said: “Hopefully it will lead to a few cracks appearing in the councils armour.

“Six years ago this used to be green belt land and then at a closed meeting at the council it turned into brown-belt.”

Mr Smith of Upper Hoyland Road said that the warehouse had upset everyone in the area and the campaigning would not stop despite construction of the warehouse being well under way.

He said: “The building is not going anywhere but it affects every single person here. It’s so big nobody can get away from it - the village is absolutely devastated.

“Basically I think we just need to know whether this could have been built elsewhere,”
