PLANS to open a community centre in Pogmoor have been put on the backburner after a residents' group suffered funding setbacks.
The Pogmoor Residents' Association had wanted to open the community centre, but vice chairman Tom Parnham said it was a 'pipe dream' that was now unlikely to happen.
The group had looked into the possibility of buying the Travellers Rest pub before it was reopened.
They were twice turned down for a £5,000 grant from the Old Town Ward Alliance and were told it was too much money to spend on something which might not come to fruition.
Tom said: "It was an ambitious plan. I drive around the country and see all these little communities and Pogmoor has nothing. But we haven't got the money - it's a lot for a small group to raise. The big funders want hard evidence that it is feasible and what you are going to do with the money, and that's what the study does."
