RESIDENTS have voted to abolish Brierley Town Council.
Today's meeting at Barnsley Town Hall heard the results of this week's four-day ballot, which saw 1,187 people have their say.
After an hour-long count, 983 people voted in favour of abolishing the debt-ridden parish council, while just 202 voted to retain it. Two votes could not be counted due to the voters' views 'not being clear'.
Barnsley Council will now have the final say on its future and a report will be shown to councillors at the next full council meeting on July 30, before they have their own vote on a date which has yet to be confirmed.
Coun Sir Steve Houghton, leader of Barnsley Council, said: "Only Barnsley Council can take a decision on this issue but the people of Brierley and Grimethorpe have spoken.
"I'll be taking a motion to full council on July 30 recommending that our officers work with Brierley Town Council to produce a report with a strategy, key actions and timetable for the abolition of the town council and civil parish.
"I expect that this will go to full council in September 2015. We will also ask the town council not to take any major financial or policy decisions that might affect its position."
