THICK, acrid smoke has plagued residents in Hoyle Mill after plastic and rubbish caught fire at the former Oakwell Brewery site.
Piles of rubbish have been self-combusting since the original blaze over the bank holiday weekend.
Pontefract Road was closed on Friday morning because the smoke was so thick, causing huge tailbacks through Lundwood and Monk Bretton.
David Walker, 60, who lives on Ash Row with his wife Sheila said: "I don't go out because I've had throat cancer. It was thick and blowing this way and started to affect my throat and chest. I'm in remission now, but I don't need to be breathing this in."
The original fire started at about 11pm on Bank Holiday Sunday. It has since reignited at least twice, the most recent incident being on Monday night.
